Why We Love Them: Chinese Water Dragons are stunning, bright green lizards that look like miniature iguanas but have much better temperaments. They are highly intelligent, recognize their owners, and love to swim. However, they are not beginner pets and require a serious financial and spatial commitment.

The "Snout Rubbing" Warning

CRITICAL ENCLOSURE RULE: Chinese Water Dragons do not understand the concept of clear glass. If you keep them in an all-glass terrarium, they will constantly sprint and rub their faces against the glass trying to escape. This causes "snout rubbing"—a horrific condition where they wear their nose down to the bone, leading to fatal infections.

You must provide visual barriers. Tape paper or backgrounds around the bottom 6-10 inches of the glass, or house them in solid-sided PVC or wooden enclosures.

Housing & Enclosure

Enclosure Type & Size

  • Type: Arboreal (Tree-dwelling) AND Semi-Aquatic. They need extreme height for climbing and a massive floor space for swimming.
  • Minimum Size (Babies): 40-Gallon breeder or 36x18x36 terrarium.
  • Minimum Size (Adults): 6 feet tall x 6 feet long x 3 feet wide. There are virtually no commercially available glass tanks this size. You will need to build a custom wooden/PVC enclosure or use a large grow tent.

Substrate

  • Recommended: A deep, bioactive soil mix (organic topsoil, play sand, and coconut fiber) covered in leaf litter and sphagnum moss to hold extreme humidity.

The Water Feature (Mandatory)

  • Chinese Water Dragons use water for hunting, swimming, and escaping predators.
  • You must provide a water basin large enough for the dragon to submerge its entire body (often a large plastic storage tub or a custom pond built into the enclosure).
  • Maintenance: They will almost exclusively use this water as their toilet. The water must be changed and scrubbed daily, or you must install a heavy-duty aquarium canister filter.

Décor & Enrichment

  • Climbing: Fill the vertical space with thick, sturdy branches, cork bark tubes, and large hammocks. Ensure branches are placed directly beneath the heat and UVB lamps.

Heating & Lighting

Temperature Requirements

ZoneTemperature
Basking Surface90–95°F (32–35°C)
Warm Ambient85°F (29°C)
Cool End75–80°F (24–26°C)
Nighttime Drop70–75°F (21–24°C)
  • Heating: High-wattage halogen basking bulbs suspended over a large branch.
  • Burns: Do not use heat rocks, and ensure the bulbs have a wire cage around them if mounted inside the enclosure. Water dragons are prone to jumping and burning themselves on exposed bulbs.

Lighting & UVB (CRITICAL)

  • UVB: Without intense UVB, they will rapidly develop Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD), causing twisted spines and broken legs. You must provide a T5 HO linear UVB bulb (Arcadia 12% or 14%) spanning half the length of the enclosure, replaced every 12 months.

Humidity & Water

  • Target Range: 80% to 90%.
  • Maintenance: Hand-misting is rarely enough for an enclosure this large. An automated misting system (like a MistKing) or a fogger running several times a day is almost mandatory to keep the humidity high enough without soaking the soil.

Diet & Nutrition

Chinese Water Dragons are omnivores, but their diet leans heavily toward meat (80% Protein / 20% Veggies).

Live Insects

  • Staples: Dubia roaches, crickets, locusts, and earthworms.
  • Treats: Superworms, hornworms, and waxworms.

Whole Prey & Meat

  • As they reach adulthood, you can offer thawed pinky/fuzzy mice or small feeder fish (like guppies—never goldfish) once a week.

Vegetables & Fruit

  • Offer a salad of collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, and shredded squash every few days. Offer fruits (berries, mango, banana) sparingly as a treat.

Supplements

  • Dust insects with Calcium (without D3) at almost every feeding.
  • Dust with a high-quality reptile multivitamin once a week.

How We Keep Them at Critter Cabana & Gresham Pet Supply

  • Beating Dry Oregon Furnace Air (and Summer Heat Spikes): Across the Willamette Valley and Portland Metro, running the house furnace all winter drops indoor humidity to 25–35%, which quickly causes stuck sheds and dehydration in screen-top tanks. To hold 80%+ (Requires large water feature) reliably for Chinese Water Dragon, our crew uses a deep 3–5" substrate bed (or our store-shelf 10-Part Bioactive Mix of ReptiSoil, Coco Fiber, Orchiata Bark, Sphagnum Moss, and Leaf Litter), a dedicated humid hide packed with damp sphagnum moss, and partial screen cover when needed.
  • Thermostat & Linear UVB Standard: Every heating element in our Newberg and Gresham reptile rooms runs on a thermostat probe set to Basking 95°F / Cool 80°F on the warm side with a comfortable room temperature cool retreat, paired with true on a 12-hour day/night timer. In summer, if an upstairs room climbs above 82°F, a dimming thermostat automatically backs down the basking lamp so the cool side never overheats.
  • Stocked at Newberg & Gresham: We stock reptile enclosures, thermostats, Arcadia & Zoo Med UVB lighting, bioactive substrate ingredients, live Springtails, Dwarf White, Powder Blue/Orange, Dairy Cow, and Giant Canyon isopods, and gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, hornworms, and frozen-thawed rodents at Critter Cabana (Newberg) and Gresham Pet Supply.

Common Questions (FAQ)

What size tank does an adult Chinese Water Dragon actually need?

An adult Chinese Water Dragon needs at least 6x3x6 Custom Enclosure (Adults) so you can maintain a true thermal gradient from Basking 95°F / Cool 80°F on the warm/basking side down to comfortable room temperature on the cool side.

How do I keep Chinese Water Dragon humidity at 80%+ (Requires large water feature) during dry Oregon winters?

Oregon winter furnace heat dries out thin bedding fast. Use a 3–5 inch moisture-retaining substrate mix (such as Zoo Med ReptiSoil blended with coco fiber, Orchiata bark, and sphagnum moss), provide an enclosed humid hide, and cover 50–70% of an open screen top with HVAC foil tape or a PVC panel if ambient humidity drops too low.

What is the best bioactive clean-up crew for a Chinese Water Dragon?

Pair Temperate White Springtails with a humidity-matched isopod species (such as Powder Blue/Orange for semi-arid setups or Dwarf White / Dairy Cow isopods for humid forest setups) in a 3–5 inch bioactive soil and leaf-litter bed. You can pick up our 1-Page or Tri-Fold Bioactive Substrate Recipe Guide and live cultures at Critter Cabana (Newberg) or Gresham Pet Supply.
